Hi most of you know that I am planning to homeschool my children. This week a landmark judgement was made making homeschooling in California illegal unless the parent has a teaching credential. I don't expect this judgement to make it past the California Supreme court and the governor has already declared his support of homeschooling in California. Worst case scenario for us is that Doug will be the offical teacher in our home since he already has an almost complete credential and has had an emergency credential in the past. I would like to point out though that most private school teachers don't have teaching credentials and many public school teachers have or have had in the past just emergency credentials. That in mind how fair is this judgement?
My opinion is that the choice on how a child should be educated is a very personal family decision that should be made with the child's educational needs and the parents abilities to educate in mind. There has been a ton of support for parents that choose to homeschool from curriculums that parents can choose to buy on their own to the option of using a public school to provide curriculum at home and a teacher to oversee the progress of the student and parent. I don't think the state should interfere with that. If you agree please follow this link and sign this petition that the Home School Legal Defense Association is starting. Thank you!

I just heard about this yesterday.
I believe that as parents using a public charter school, we are protected under the exemption clauses outlined in the rules of the California Department of Education guidelines for private schools. Here is the link- http://www.cde.ca.gov/sp/ps/cd/psfaq.asp#psfaqs12.
This does not mean however that is not time to sit up, take notice, and get ready to fight. This is probably just the first of more attacks.
PS I signed the petition!
